    About Pediatric OSA

Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder where a child’s airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, leading to disrupted breathing. This can result in poor sleep quality, daytime fatigue, behavioral issues, and even developmental delays. Early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric OSA are crucial to prevent long-term health problems. Common treatments include lifestyle changes, oral appliances, and sometimes surgery, depending on the severity. If left untreated, OSA can impact a child’s growth, learning, and overall well-being.

    Early Diagnosis

At TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of The Gorge, we prioritize early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric OSA. Crooked teeth can signal dysfunctional breathing and improper tongue posture. Pediatric sleep apnea is often underdiagnosed, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening for all children.

    Diagnosis

OSA is a medical condition that can only be diagnosed by a doctor. However, it can be treated by a dentist who has advanced understanding of and training on this life-threatening breathing disorder. Working with a Sleep Physician, ENT, and others is necessary in treating OSA. It is important that adult therapies are not used as these can arrest skeletal development.
